Intro: In this lab, we measured the emission of beta particles from thallium-204 and gamma rays from cesium-137 with an aluminum and lead foil. Our background is 59 counts in 45 seconds and the voltage we set was 880V. We measured an emission range of beta particles of .0934 ± .0055 cm, and an energy level for gamma rays at .774 ± .106 MeV. Procedure: First we set up the Geiger counter and determined the plateau region where the counting rate is relatively insensitive by measuring different voltages and noting at which level the number count changes by less than 10% for a 100V increase. The Geiger reached equilibrium at 880V when measured in 45 seconds. Next, we put a radioactive source under the Geiger tube to measure background radiation. We measured the amount of radiation emitted from Thallium-204 from the second shelf; then we added aluminum sheets of various thicknesses on top of it until we were near the background level. With Gamma rays, we repeated the above procedure but used lead sheets instead of aluminum. We also began measuring from the lowest shelf. We made measurements at 45 seconds with increasing numbers of sheets until the background level was reached. Results:
