Regensburg Double justification Augustine: orig sin pulls as back impedes our progress Justification by faith Righteousness of Christ loaned/imputed Mantra justification by another Patism Dignified/coworkers w/G Justified b/c justified Righteous b/c of God’s gifts which we cooperated with and were conferred with justification Problem is that life is short, so one needs Purgatory to make up the gap. God’s gift + our cooperation = inherent justification Catholic thought still believes in purgatory, but there is a de-mythologization of it. So the notion that we’re not yet ready for the beatific vision, perhaps there is an intermediate stage. Eastern Orthodoxy sometimes thinks there is and sometimes there isn’t a purgatory. But by and large, the Protestants gave up on purgatory. John Wesley tries to make us perfect in this life (real quick). Catholic theology gives you time to do this, whtih the theory that Do you expect to be made perfect with love in this life? For ordination of Methodists… the answer is “yes”. However luridly described or vividly described… us works in progress after this short life will be able to stand in God’s presence. Holiness is something daunting. The kind of imperfection that marks this world isn’t something that can subsist in the presence of that force. What is suggested, rather than Purgatory (on the Catholic side), what we have is a gift from Christ, pure gift, and this too, is pure gift…. The imputation to the sinner by Christ’s gift, to make up the shortfall between what we have achieved in this life and the standard of holiness required to stand in the presence of God. Physical fitness, short football player in front of him – swinging on bars, climbing ropes… jumping over the wall. A supplemental gift, of the righteousness of Christ to get us over the defects in ourselves. Double justice: Put into the Regensburg book. Came as a surprise to Langland and Eck. The Augsberg Confession. Article 5, Ch 5 in the Regensburg Book , the Doctrine of Double Justice. Imperfect as it might be, it was a compromise formula with which both could live. Gastro Cantrorini, a diplomat from Venice. Writes a letter to Rome explaining the Bembo, Cardinal, in Rome, very nice man, but not very theological. He likes it…. The Pope hates it and rejects it. For two reasons. Reason 1: Whatever happened to Purgatory? You can’t just say it’s not there just to compromise. Purgatory is! Reason 2: Concupisience that remains in Christians, is sinful in itself. This is Protestant and Augustinian. The Roman Catholics don’t think that the concupiscence in itself is evil, only when I yield to it. It might be an ally of merit, because as I resist it I increase merit before God. Virtue untested, what kind of virtue is that?
