Old Testament 11 Wednesday, November 19, 2008 Athanatius in letter to ????  exactitude that the psalms give us in our prayer.  A way of thinking  about prayer.  Prayer is aiming at something.  It is aiming at the heart of God.  From your mouth  to God’s ear.  That is the line that prayer is supposed tobe tracing.  You can miss the mark.  You  can be using God’s name but spinning off here and there.  The psalms give us words to pray that  the church and the synagogue have both received as sanctified words that help us to trace a line  from our hearts to God’s heart.  Trace that line and say where it gets you. Chad:  we’ll be charged with writing prayers for our congregation.  It’s more than how you feel.  It’s not just beautiful expressions of sentiment.  They are carefully crafted.   Think about the kind of hymns:  a proclamatory aspect.  Pastoral prayers have a lot of  proclamatory aspect.  A great way of the way ED thinks theologically is through the liturgy that  she knows by heart.   Psalm 136 Psalm 136 1 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good. His love endures forever. 2 Give thanks to the God of gods. His love endures forever. 3 Give thanks to the Lord of lords: His love endures forever. 4 to him who alone does great wonders, His love endures forever. 5 who by his understanding made the heavens, His love endures forever. 6 who spread out the earth upon the waters, His love endures forever. 7 who made the great lights— His love endures forever.
