Page 1 of 8 OT 12 March 25, 2009 Song of Songs Feast of Annunciation Lancelot Angleles 4:30 today, a lecture in the York room. Song of Songs is treated as a midrash on Exodus. Currently one of the Biblical books getting the most of scholarly attention. Marvin Pope, her teacher at Yale, begins the series of conversations. A generation long conversation. One of the only books in which a female voice is predominant. Raises in an hermeneutical-conscious age, raises hermeneutical questions in are really interesting way: How does Scripture speak to the church/synagogue How might we as readers change as readers in response to what we read? What is the special contribution of each book to the larger message of Scripture? How does one text answer other texts? Safe to say that SoS is the book of the Bible that we think most differently about than most of our predesessors. Used to think of it as Divine Love, the love of God for the people of Israel. Jews for Israel, Christians for the Chruch. An extended metaphor, a sexual, erotic story is like an extended metaphor – an allegory. As a quick definitonL A narrative where the surface of the narrative is transparent to another story underneath. Christ and the Church. God and Israel. Now, few scholars would say that this is what the song is about. She still thinks so. But she thinks the eroticism is to be taken seriously and literally. She is going to suggest that we don’t need to choose between the two viewpoints. The texts don’t choose between them. She thinks it is meant to be open to more than one level of interpretation. Page 2 of 8 And about both of those things and more. 1: The allegorical view is the eariest, beginning in the 2 nd century, the first commentary on any Biblical book. Hippolytus on the SoF… about the Love of Christ for the Chruch. The first commentary that we actually have is that of Origen. . Also Joshua and Leviticus. Origen is the most important Biblical scholar ever, if only because he showed how to read the OT. Origen speaks of the relation of Christ at the corporate level and also at the individual level. For Origen, kisses signify Christ coming near to humankind. As we read and we learn something , that is a kiss from Jesus (I have been well-loved). Exegesis is the art of intimacy with God. Now we understand why the Song of Songs along with Psalms was the most interpreted book. Deeply informed by monastacism, and Jean LeClerc. The Love of Learning and Desire for God… a culture that relates to God through holy desire. In that culture, the Song of Songs was treasured as the assurance of God’s love for souls that are striving towards God in love. She thinks it’s a mistake of thinking of monastic culture as uptight.
