Page 1 of 5 OT 12 April 1, 2009 Debra Band What are the issues in creating visual images of Song of Songs? The Honeybee in the Garden. Focusing on particular issues. Before moving into the illuminations themselves. Honeybees belong in gardens, and also relates to her name. And scribes also have a custom of embedding their names somewhere. No full bodied imagery. This is erotic love poetry. She decided to work with hands, arms, textile patterns, but no full bodies. The most important element is that there are two different readings. This is an anthology rather than a single literary work. A liteteral reading: A love poem between two lovers. A deeply engrained rabbinic principle that says it is not be to be taken literally. The rabbi Achriva saw this as the long some sung between God and Israel sung on the shores of the Red Sea. But the problem of how to reconcile the two readings…. Walking on the beach in La Jolla, a way of fusing… a series of daydreams of a pair of lovers in a walled garden. The imagery can be interpreted simultaneously in both readings. Created a coherence in the poems and tell a story. A visual midrash on the Song of Songs…. 2 nd Temple period – Herodian wall. The rosette – 2 nd Temple period Judean design. Derived from Persian design. Ruins of the palace in Susa. A spray of lilies sticking out. A midrash of the giving of the 10 Commandments. A story of a garden planted with wonderful and delicious things. The orchards good things were not well tended and became a tangled disaster. The King is driving through one last time, and sees a single stalk of lily…… and for the sake of the lily, spares the garden / orchard.
