Yanyi Lu HUM 20C Simmons Practice Final 6/1/2011 The reason why slaves had to work hard for their owners is because the slave holders used their power to control the slaves. Sometimes, the willingness of whether people want to finish the work does not depend on their feelings but on the power of their owners. Slaveholders usually controlled their slaves by threatening the slaves. In Octavia Butler’s novel, “Kindred”, she describes that the slaveholders sell or punish their slaves when the slaves try to escape. If the slaves do not finish their work on time, the slaveholder will sell their children or family members in order to control them Once, a slave asks Dana to teach his sister to read and write. When Rufus knows Dana meets the slaves and teaches other slaves reading and writing. Rufus sells the slave in order to stop Dana meeting with and teaching other slaves. In addition, Rufus influences Dana by helping him talk to Alice by threatening her with Kevin.
