Essay questions 1. Discuss the similarities and differences between the terms proportion and scale, as used in architecture. Give examples of the different kinds of proportions that we discussed in class and describe the factors and conditions that may affect our perception of scale. Proportion and scale both measure ratios but different ratios. Proportion is the ratio among dimensions of architectural elements while scale is the ratio among the perceived sizes of different items. Proportion can be objectively measured and appraised, but scale is subjective and relative considering the environment in relationship to human size. There are two kinds of proportional systems: practical and theoretical. Practical has two subgroups: technological and anthropometric. Technological means that the dimensions of the building depend on the dimensions of the materials used to build it. For example, most U.S. houses are around 25-feet wide because it takes exactly two standardized “stick frame” (12-13 feet) without having to cut any of them. Anthropometric is using the human body as a reference point in building other things. For example, furniture’s dimensions are adjusted to the human body that won’t be too big or too small. Theoretical proportion system assumes that there are some proportions more eye-pleasing than others, for example, the Golden Ratio. There are 4 factors that may affect our perception of scale: size of architectural
