Alexandra Nass AASP202 February 9, 2012 WP: week 3 What is the significance of Levine’s discussion of Frederick Douglass, Sandy Jenkins, and Covey? Who are each of these figures? What is important about their interaction here? Sandy is a slave who lives near Mr. Covey's plantation and Douglass meets while he's hiding in the woods. Before Douglass and Covey fight, Sandy gives him a root and tells him it has magical powers. He says that if Douglass carries the root with him, it will protect him from being whipped. When Douglass wins the fight, it seems like Sandy's root worked, but Douglass isn't sure. Sandy is a slave who puts his faith in folk beliefs and magic. The lack of control over the slaves lives influenced them to retain their old beliefs in conjuation and immorality to exert control over the slave master. They used conjuration to gain power over their white oppressors, by showing that blacks are capable of more power than white masters and slave-owners thought possible. According to Chesnutts story, how did white people respond to the idea of conjure? Did they take it seriously? They became angry because of the idea of conjure, lashing out on their slaves. During this idea of conjuration, one person used the power of conjuration for group liberation and the white man, who has power, loses his power and grip on reality. Now, the slaves increased autonomy allows them to do as they wish....
