Alexandra Nass MUET200 TA: Deborah Byrd February 15, 2012 Mahiri Keita Edwards With a lack of knowledge about the history and culture of music, the performance of Mahriri Keita Edwards opened my eyes to a new musical tradition I was unaware of. The role that music plays within my life is dependent on the popular music during that period of time that is played on the radio, or influenced by the media. My inadequate experience in the field of music had influenced the performance of Mahiri Keita Edwards to be very inspiring to me. Keita-Edwards maintained the Mande musical tradition by portraying African culture using beliefs, values, and symbols within their background; Different instruments are used according to specific correlations within that culture, as well as the explanations of songs and symbols are expressed through rhythms and words. Keita- Edwards displays the importance of culture by using music to illustrate heritage, his home, and dedication to one’s culture and background. The expression of identity is portrayed by the colorful clothing worn, which expresses the Mande tradition within the
