Diversity: Culture and the Family 20:51 Diversity-      a situation that includes representation of multiple (ideally all) groups  within a prescribed environment, such as a university or workplace Discrimination-      biased decision based on a prejudice against an individual group  characterized by race, class, sexual orientation, disability or other feature Cultural competency-      set of congruent behaviors, attitudes, and policies that come  together in a system, agency, or among professionals Ethnocentrism-      view other groups or cultures according to the standards of ones  own culture or group Five elements that characterize culturally competent organizations 1. Value diversity- understand other cultures have certain values and behaviors  different then dominant behaviors 2. System for cultural self-assessment- allows individuals in organization to  choose policies and practices that reduce barriers to participation in various  groups, without policies you cant judge to self-assess, to see if behaviors  absent or someone failed to do something, you can improve, without policies  no self assess 3. Aware of dynamics that occur when persons from diff cultures interact- people  from diff cultures have diff communication styles, America we value direct eye
