September 29, 2011 The War on Drugs Drug Abuse Deviance and crime How would you classify substance abuse? Is it formal or informal deviance? Both informal and formal Our society has adopted a punitive model to deal with illegal drugs but not everywhere is equally punitive . Punitive mode l punishing people who transgress in a way. Not everywhere is punitive in the same area to the same degree. What determines how punitive a community is? Penalties How long you might spend in prison? How much you might get fined? Priorities How important is substance abuse? Likelihood likelihood of the sentence depending on how severe it is. What substances we choose to criminalize vary widely across societies. Different counties have different problematic issues. Marijuana is legal in Amsterdam and not legal in most places. Different drinking age in different places Which Substances? What do these all have in common?
