Population and Environment Population growth= good or bad? “pollyannas”- too many people AHHH!! Not enough space, not enough food “cornucopians”- unlimited, ultimate resource. More people is better, more labor, more problem solvers, etc… -women’s reproductive health -Implosionism- population going down too much- below replacement level Population Geography- scale and reproductive behavior Changes occur because of economic and cultural reasons -marriage not as important in Europe -children are expensive Population Basics -175 people per minute population growth -growth = more birth than death - rate of growth is slowing -level off later in century -Birth and death rate= per 1000 people -Rate of natural increase= (birth rate – death rate)/10 -Doesn’t include immigration -fertility rate= number of children an average woman has through life -not a percentage -Migration Alters growth rates and fertility rates -Age Structures -Younger population will have longer influence -population momentum
