Organic Foods Presentation Slide 11 ORGANIC FARMING TECHNIQUE Care for animals: Certified organic feed does not include ingredients from “urea and/or manure; and from mammalian or poultry slaughter by-products in feed for mammals or poultry.” Manufacturers must prevent the contamination of organic feed with antibiotics and hormones. Animals must have access to the outdoors Grazing animals (cows) must have certified organic pastures Cannot use genetically modified organisms, both plant and animal, and cloned animals. Cannot irradiate organic foods USDA regulations covering fish are not in place at this time. Slide 12 ORGANIC AGRICULTURE CERTIFICATION Small farmers with less than $5,000 in organic sales, such as those selling at small farmers’ markets, are exempt from the certification process but they still must be truthful in their label claims and comply with the new government standards.
