First Contacts II: The Spanish  02/02/2009 10:57:00 Lecture Outline: 1. Views from the boat and from the shore 2. Spain in North America 3. The De Soto expedition, 1539-1542 Documents suggest that Indians viewed European colonizers as possessed  of some spiritual qualities.  Why are  they here? What are we going to do about them?  Their response seemed quite logical; viewed them as aliens… Europeans were struck by the amount that they were touched and surrounded by Native people, instances of touch  and prodding (Native people wanted to see if they were humans)  Native people, after initial awe, wanted to become allies with the colonizers.   Early contacts were basically peaceful.  There was a fair bit of reciprocity and exchanges of hospitality.  There was  too much at stake for people on either side to pick gratuitous fights.   Major intellectual problem: How do we treat these Native people?  They aren’t in our Bible…Realized they couldn’t  understand the Natives without understanding their language.   A lot of the early ventures into North America involved the kidnapping of Native people (teenage boys).  People  who were brought back to Europe, taught how to speak, then brought back to North America to serve as  translators.  Also brought back to Europe and put on show; bringing Native Americans back was evidence that the  colonizers actually found something (erase skepticism of journey). Kidnapping leads to the evaporation of the initial “honeymoon” phase of contact.  In almost all circumstances, the  Native interpreter becomes a key instigator of action against the colonizers after their return.
