Anthropology 116 – Growth Growth o Secular trend in growth People are growing more resulting in a greater heights over the year – people getting taller Environmental changes can effect things like growth o Differential tissue growth Can’t have everything growing at the same time Things grow (spike) in phases o Woman carry more fat than boys do In order to reproduce the female need mass in order to afford doing this Reproduction o Ovarian function Variation results in variation in fecundity o Testicular function Variation and fecundity o Both controlled by a negative feedback loop o Significant interpopulation and interindividual variation Sexual maturation o Women The start of menarche Secular trend is that the age of menarche in girls has gone from about 17 to about 12 What triggers menarche Frische hypothesis o Women carry more fat which stores energy; once girls reach a critical fatness to be able to support menarche then they start menarche; more fat = early age of menarche o
