Anthropology 116 – Human Evolution Pale-anthropology – the study of humans and their lineage Hominid – any member of the family hominidae, including all australopithecines and the genus homo The only place that pre-australopithecines and australopithecines have been found are in Africa – East Africa o Rift Valley o Olduvai Gorge o Environmental change The temperature drops, increased seasonality and percent woodland/savanna (fewer rainforest) in Africa Transition away from apelike characteristics toward more “human” characteristics – less time in tress Unique attributes in the hominid lineage o Humans Bipedal Reduced canines More complex tool use Less sexual dimorphism Larger brain Language Difference betweens apes and hominids o Bipedal The pelvis is composed of three elements The size and shape between the chimp pelvis and the human o Chimp is long o Human is wide and bowl shaped Has to do with muscle attachment o Especially with gluteus maximus Chimps butt is smaller Problem o Birth Harder for humans than any other species Baby must rotate in the birth canal to fit its head through the pelvis o Knee problems/ankle injuries Not designed to walk – came from natural selection o Wider hips? Makes bipedalism less efficient Adaptations o The human femur is angled (bicondylar angle) Helps position lower leg directly under the body
