Anthropology 116 – Sexual Effects in Males Menopause o A constraint o Using a few thousand eggs a month o Eventually you run out of eggs o Don’t just produce more eggs because they have a set lifespan Rate of fetal loss goes up as you get older Males o Caloric intake Made males fast Modest decline in testosterone o This decline does not effect fertility Lots of variation in the beginning Males are not as sensitive to energetic deprivation as females No one declines to abnormal levels of testosterone Exercise Couch potatoes versus marathon runners o Runners look pretty normal o No difference in reproductive function between athletes and couch potato males When they doubled the regiment there was a decline in fertility o Still not near to abnormal levels o Sperm count decreased Huge range of variation in sperm count Male reproduction is very simple Little time/effort/a couple ounces of fluid o No paternal certainty o None of the factors involved with sperm condition were significant in predicting the ability to get to conception
