Project: The Anti Discrimination Tribunal Queensland and Aboriginal Arts Centres Collaboration to Promote Antidiscrimination. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: This project works with the Anti Discrimination Tribunal Queensland (ADTQ) to unearth the issues surrounding racial discrimination towards Australian Aborigines in the district of Queensland (figure following). It aims to devise the most appropriate strategy to tackle current issues that have evolved between Aborigines and colonial Australians. The primary issue at hand is to understand the route of discrimination. From previous literature on discrimination it is evident that a stereotypical overview of Aborigines has developed and as a result Aboriginal culture has become misinterpreted. Anthropological contextualisation will assist in understanding why discrimination is still occurring by considering the cultural and social complexities in current Aboriginal society. To resolve apparent conflicts this project hypothesises that a reappraisal of Aboriginal culture needs to be conveyed to the remainder of society. Because of the connection between Australian Aboriginals and their art this project investigates whether using art centres and art work shops would aid in changing and developing broken relationships. Furthermore, having understood the success and popularity of arts centres in the Western Desert and additional workshops (Caruana, 1993 and Morphy, 1998), both economically and socially (Myers, 2002) it can be understood that art, with the right persuasion, may be a catalyst for forming relationships and endorsing antidiscrimination in Queensland. Furthermore, this top- down development strategy would naturally evolve a suitable way in which Aborigines wish to be perceived, through their contribution to the project. Therefore, this project aims to unearth how effective art workshops would be in encouraging antidiscrimination in Queensland. 1

This project adopts this initiative to plan for redeeming negative stereotypes of Aborigines and developing a more positive perception. It considers the privacy and secrecy of art for Aboriginals and aims to work with Aboriginals ensuring that the art schools will educate and aid interaction rather than cross the boundaries of sacred secrecy (Caruana, 1993). Aboriginals have previously sought to adapt their art, in order to retain secrecy, and use it in modern circles to educate non-indigenous Australians (McCulloch, 1999). Although the cultural authenticity of Aboriginal art has been challenged, because it has been adapted, the central purpose of adaptation is to educate (Myers, 1999). Many debates have reconsidered the authenticity of art; however from an anthropological perspective the rendered art to the Aborigines is just as culturally pertinent, because the art is still used to relate stories of the Dreamtime and ancestors past (Layton, 1981).
