ANTH 103 Midterm Review This is only a general review sheet; it is not an exhaustive summary of all possible exam questions! Know the following terms: Culture – The learned behaviors and symbols that allow people to live in groups. The primary means by which humans adapt to their environments. Six features of culture: 1) learned; 2) symbolic; 3) integrated; 4) shared; 5) adaptive/maladaptive; 6) changing (see week 3 notes) Enculturation - Ethnography – The major research tool of cultural anthropology; includes both fieldwork among people in society and the written results of fieldwork Ethnology - Ethnocentrism – Judging other cultures from the perspective of one’s own culture. The notion that one’s own culture is more beautiful, rational, and nearer to perfection than any other Cultural relativism – The notion that a culture should not be judged or evaluated according to the values of another culture. They must be analyzed with reference to their own histories and culture traits understood in terms of the cultural whole
