US Indian Wars, 1865-1890  11/03/2009 10:02:00 1. The Civil War and the “Winning of the West” 1865-1890 2. The Lakotas and the Black Hills, 1868-2009 3. Endgame and Wounded Knee, 1890 In 1890, it’s no longer an option for Native Americans to use military resistance against USA  The relationship between the Civil War and the Winning of the West, 1865-1890 Homestead Act, 1862  o Government will grant 160 public acres to Native people for $10 o Encourage movement into parts of the USA that have not yet been settled  o Encourages 337K people to move to Kansas alone; accelerates rate of movement to the  periphery of the plains and the Pacific coast  Similarities and differences in US Army conduct toward Confederacy and Plains Indians  o During the War, the Union Army treated the Confederate Army as a foreign nation o Realized they could not defeat the Plains Indians in open battle; therefore, the federal  government attacked encampments of Native people on the Plains o Destruction of Native people’s food base: attacking bison  End to treaty making in 1871; Congress decides that there will be no more Indian treaties.  Basic  assumption of Nationhood and status of nations is called into question and basically abandoned.   Civil War treats White southern with a greater degree of forbearance and limits than they do with Native  people.  o The West was idealized as the space of the nation’s future and it was protected as a space for
