Objective/Introduction: It is known that many transition metal ions have unpaired electrons. By using magnetic susceptibility measurements provides a way of determining the numbers of the unpaired electrons in the ions. The purpose of this experiment is to determine the numbers of unpaired “d” electrons many transition metal ions by way of magnetic susceptibility balance and by using other equations. Procedures: Equipment: Reagents: Balance Cobalt (II) Chloride hexahydrate, MSB CoCl 2 *6H 2 O MSB cells Iron(III) nitrate nonahydrate, Mortar and pestle Fe(NO 3 ) 3 * 9H 2 O Manganese(II) chloride tetrahydrate, MnCl 2 *4H 2 O Zinc nitrate hexahydrate, Zn(NO 3 ) 2 *6H 2 O Potassium permanganate, KMNO 4 Manganese dioxide, MnO 2 The procedures for this lab can be found on page 98 of Laboratory Experiments for General Chemistry Spring 2006-Summer 2006; Toby F.
