MGT 415 2/26/12 Vision Statements A good example of a vision statement would be “There will be a personal computer on every desk running Microsoft software.” (Microsoft). After looking around for a good vision statement online, I realized that I came across this one a lot. The more I looked it over the more I realized why people would use it as an example of a good vision statement. This vision statement has all the elements of a vision statement. It’s a forward looking achievement that the business hopes to accomplish. You can also tell that it really came from the passion of Microsoft, and gives you a sense that they actually care for this vision statement. Not only that, but its short and concise making it easy to stick with you and remember. This vision statement is also a shared vision of Microsoft, and not just the vision of one person. We will earn our customers enthusiasm through continuous improvement driven by the integrity, teamwork, and innovation of GM people. (GM). When I first read this I actually thought it was alright. Its forward looking, and it even explains how they will become world leaders in transportation products and related services. After reading it carefully though I understand why this is a bad example of a vision statement. While it tells us how they are going to accomplish this achievement, it doesnt separate GM from other companies. Any company that is a competitor to GM can say the same thing. There is also a lot words in this vision statement that are open for interpretation. The vision statement by GM is different than the one by Microsoft because the one by Microsoft is short, easily understood, and uses passion, while GM is long, harder to interpret, and not very passionate....
