Intro to Organizational behavior Interdisciplinary field dedicated to better understanding and managing people at work, understanding why people behave the way they do Management Philosophies Scientific mangament time/motion studies, thought telling people what to do (no individual differences; assembly line) and paying them were the 2 things that motivated employees Administrative principles school Bureaucracy – eliminate all differences (procedures, policies); have there only be 1 way of doing something; no relationships between upper and lower Human relations school – concern with development of employees Hawthorne studies – increased wattages of light bulb increased productivity, then decreased wattages still resulted in increased productivity because the presence of the supervisor made the employees feel cared about Perceptions are more important than reality Individual differences matter Social environment and interaction among peers at work is important Open systems approach external environment is influential
