Dean Email Address: [email protected] Class Time: Monday 6:30 -9:10 PM Location: Connelly Hall (Maguire Campus) Room 120 Office: Mandeville Hall Room 338 Hours: Monday and Thursday 1:00-2:00 Required Text: Principals of Risk Management and Insurance, 11 th ed, Rejda, Pearson ISBN 978-0-321-41493-9 Required Other: A financial calculator is essential. A laptop also is required as exams, quizzes, and certain assignments are conducted online. Students should plan to bring their laptops to all classes unless otherwise specified by the instructor. Forgetting one’s laptop will not be accepted as an excuse for non-completion of an in-class quiz, assignment or exam Objectives: This course is an introductory course of the risk management and insurance program. It also covers the insurance component of the financial planning track. The focus of the course is to introduce the students to the terminology of insurance. To understand insurance, students are exposed to contract law and agency relationships. Also provided is an overview of the financial services industry. Once these areas have been covered, the course will examine personal property and liability insurance, and some commercial property and general liability insurance. In addition, there will be a discussion of employee benefits, medical plans, and social insurance programs. The course is designed to cover all the topics listed under insurance and a number of the topics listed under employee benefits of the CFP Board topic list. Goals: Students should be able to: 1) Become conversant with the terminology 2) Understand the contractual nature of insurance 3) Explain the standard personal life, property and insurance policies 4) Analyze and explain employee benefits Grading: 10% Weekly Text/ Assignments (“AQs”) 25% Weekly Blackboard In-class Quizzes 25% 40%
