Office Hours: Room 509 Leacock Mon/Wed: 10:00-11:00 398-4948 Thursday: 4:00-5:00 r ichard.schultz@mcgill.ca or By Appointment POLI-221 The Government of Canada This course provides an introduction to the central institutions and actors in the Government and the governing of Canada. These include the Governor-General, Prime Minister and Cabinet, Parliament, the Federal System and the Judiciary. The basic focus is on the principles and practices that structure the exercise of political power in Canada. Attention is paid to changes in the nature and distribution of power and how such changes affect the relationships among and between political institutions and actors, including citizens, and between political power and democratic control. Required Readings : Faron Ellis and Heather MacIvor, Parameters of Power: Canada’s Political Institutions Brief Edition .(Listed in course outline as Parameters ) (Available in Bookstore) All other readings are available on WebCT. Course Requirements There are four requirements. There will be two In-Term Exams , the first on Thursday October 6 and the second on Thursday November 10 . Both exams will be held from 6:15-7:30 pm. in Leacock 132 . Conference participation is the third requirement. Conference times are listed, and can be registered for, on Minerva. The fourth requirement is the Final Exam to be held during the formal exam period in December after the end of classes. Grade Distribution First In-Term Exam 20% Second In-Term Exam 20% Conference Participation 20% Final Exam 40% In the event of extraordinary circumstances beyond the University’s control, the content and/or evaluation scheme in this course is subject to change. Lectures are normally on Monday and Wednesday. Please note the following: No lecture September 19 and 21. Lectures on the following Fridays: September 2, 9, 23, 30; October 14
