Convenient turning point in European history is 1945: Easy way to organize material. First give a historical prospective on Europe before 1945. Look for another turning points that takes us to 1945. Historical period: The long 19 th century: 1789 1945. Importance of revolutions and interstate wars and disagreements. Democracy is not the birthright of European people. It has come recently to Europe. 1945: Fascism is defeated and it removes a political option. Democracy in Eastern Europe: Late 1980s 1990s. 1945 present : Long Peace. But it is relatively recent. From 1789 to 1945 lots of turbulence between states. The long 19 th century begins with revolution and ends with war. Consolidation of the state system in Europe: It becomes stronger and more durable rather than weaker. The state is king. The French revolution introduces a new way of how a political system could be intonated. Republican state: Party of movement party of order. Social Question in industrial capitalism: How is the working class integrated politically in Western Europe? ideas of democratic republicans ( who want to suppress the monarchy, and who rejects regimes, and constitutional monarchy) for that kind of republican ( French revolution) even a monarch with no power is unacceptable. Importance of occupation in Germany, political separation of East and West ( Cold War) and democratic consolidation in the West.( Cold War) and democratic consolidation in the West....
