Anthony Petrillo Mrs. Goodman AP Language 7 February 2012 The theme of “the classic war between a passion and a responsibility is central to Isaac‘s Storm . The protagonist, Isaac Cline, who is the chief meteorologist at the Galveston, Texas office of the U.S. Weather Bureau has the responsibility of protecting the people of Galveston by informing them about natural disasters, and he has a passion for always being right. This trait proves to be deadly because it causes Isaac to neglect his responsibility. Isaac will never admit that he is wrong, but he feels guilty for the rest of his life. Isaac believes that he has all of the necessary technology to forecast the weather despite the fact that his science is fairly primitive. On the day of the Galveston hurricane of 1900, “Isaac’s Storm,” Isaac is confident that there is nothing to be afraid of. He stands by his earlier comment that any storm causing serious damage to Galveston is an “absurd delusion.” Isaac’s brother ad his assistant, Joseph, expresses concern that the storm might be worse than they had
