Anthony Petrillo World History 4 6 October 2010 West African Drug Problem Gambia now has extremely harsh penalties for possession of drugs. Because of poverty and weak governments lacking the ability to effectively stop it, drug trafficking in West Africa has greatly increased. In order to help reduce the amount of drug trafficking, Gambia has decided to sentence anybody carrying more than 250 grams of cocaine or heroin to death. The Gambian Justice Minister, Edward Anthony Gomez, told parliament, "The devastating impact of these activities on the stability and development of any state cannot be overemphasized." He tells us that he hopes this new punishment will deter drug traffickers. The punishment before this was up to 40 years in prison. I do think that this is a very harsh punishment, but it also seems as if it might be necessary. Africa is having a large drug problem, and the Justice Minister is definitely

Even if it is harsh, rules are rules, and I believe that now that the law has been passed, it should definitely be enforced. This law may serve its purpose well. With such harsh penalties, the drug traffickers will hopefully fear getting caught, and move somewhere else. I do see one problem, though. The Gambian government does not have the resources needed to enforce the law. If they cannot enforce the law properly, increasing the punishment will not do much. They need to tighten up border security for this to work. Otherwise, it will have little effect.
