EXPANSION OF THE UNIVERSE 13:36 Elliptical, spiral, irregular DISTANCE DAIGRAM ON EXAM Ladder bc we build up How we measure distances in the universe Tully fisher relationship to determine how far away a galaxy is Hubbles law – as we look further away, measure velocity as a function of distance Superclusters – large collections of galaxy groups and clusters Form walls (long regions of higher galaxy density) and voids (regions of low galaxy density) Hubbles law = velocity appear to move away from our galaxy increases…. Expansion of universe is like expansion of a balloon As you blow up a balloon, surface area increases and distances between points expands

Unformatted text preview: All people standing on balloon see same thing See that it appears that they are standing still and other people moving Galaxies not moving away from us, just entire fabric of space expanding between us The distance between us and the galaxy is stretching like a rubber band Doppler shift occurs bc space is stretching out and the wavelength of the photon is stretching out as it travels to us Where is the edge of the universe? NO edge to a sphere Isn’t the very distant universe expanding faster than the speed of light? The Big Bang Cosmic background radiation 13:36 13:36...
