This experiment uses a fiber optic displacement transducer constructed from two parallel fibers joined together. Light will travel through one of the fibers, exit that fiber, reflect off of a surface, and travel back into the neighboring fiber. A photo detector is used on the receiving end of the fiber to measure the amount of light that returns. Figure 1: Assemble the equipment as shown in diagram 8-A - set up for DIR modulation and GAIN at X10 - connect LED to the EMITTER output and the PIN diode to the PIN input - connect the transmitting fiber to the emitter - connect the receiving fiber to the PIN photo detector - insert both fibers into the mounting block installed on the X-Y mechanism - set the square wave generator for a symmetrical 3V p-p output at 1kHz and connect it to the EMITTER input. -
