Chemistry 111 Activity Series & Single Harwood Displacement Reactions 1 What is the Activity Series? It’s a list of metals in order of their reactivity. More active metals (ones that are more likely to form a cation, relatively speaking) displace less active metals (ones that are less likely to form a cation, relatively speaking) from their compounds. For example, copper is more active than silver as shown below: Cu(s) + 2 AgNO 3 (aq) 2 Ag(s) + Cu(NO 3 ) 2 (aq) Some metals, like calcium, react with cold water to give hydrogen gas: Ca(s) + 2 H 2 O( l ) 2 H 2 (g) + Ca(OH) 2 (aq) Other metals react with steam to give hydrogen gas: Fe(s) + 2 H 2 O(g) 2 H 2 (g) + Fe(OH) 2 (aq) Other metals react with acid to give hydrogen gas: Ni(s) + 2 HCl(g) H 2 (g) + NiCl 2 (aq) The activity series is shown below:
