Pre-Mendel Breeding was thought to result from a blending of characters- Blending Theory. A chemical theory in which inheritance occurred like the mixing of paint. Characters under study were often quantitative in nature. Mendel developed a particulate theory based on the segregation of qualitative traits.

Definitions: Alleles= variations of a gene. Homozygous= zygotes with two copies of the same allele ( TT or tt ). Heterozygous= zygotes with different copies of alleles ( Tt ). Genotype: the genetic makeup of the zygote ( TT , Tt , or tt ). Phenotype: the character determined by the genotype (and environment).

Probabilities: If alleles segregate into gametes rondomly, then the greater number of trails the more uniform the results. Peas were a good “experimental system” because Mendel could observe high numbers.
