Tufa in Mono Lake Tufa in Mono Lake Spring water from the mountains enters the lake through springs in the lake bottom mixing water rich in Ca 2+ with water rich in CO 3 2- . The resulting CaCO 3 forms pillars which are revealed as the lake evaporates. The formation of tufa results from the reaction Ca 2+ (aq) + CO 3 2- (aq) CaCO 3 (s) reaching a state of equilibrium.
