Another example of a redox reaction As other chemical reactions, we should write balanced equations for redox reactions Cu + 2 AgNO 3 -> Cu(NO 3 ) 2 + 2 Ag Examine the ionized form of the reaction Cu + 2 Ag + + 2 NO 3 - -> Cu 2+ + 2 NO 3 - + 2 Ag Determine the oxidation number of elements on each side of the reaction: Reactants Cu 0 Ag 1+ O 2- N 5+ ( determined last lecture ) Products: Cu 2+ Ag 0 O 2- N 5+ In that reaction: Cu loses electrons (Cu -> Cu 2+ + 2e - ); Cu is the electron donor Ag + gains electrons (Ag + + e - -> Ag); Ag + is the electron acceptor Next slide: half-reactions -----------------
