1/23/2012 Independent: Number of hours of sleep Dependent: How well they perform on the test Experimental: Group that was woken up throughout the night Control: People who got to sleep throughout the night Placebo effect When participants expectations about the treatment affect their behavior. If you give someone a pill and tell them that it is going to make you feel better people will feel better just thinking that they are taking a pill, regardless of how the pill really affected them. Placebo: harmless substance with no psychological effects given to participants in the control group so that they are treated exactly like those in the experimental group. Double-blind experiment: neither the participant nor the experimenter knows which participants are in each group during the experiment. The reason we do this is because sometimes the experimenter could even hint towards the participants which pill is actually fake or real.
