Psychology 1101 January 11, 2012 Bring clicker starting Wednesday Register for Connect by next Wednesday Ch. 1 HW due by January 20 o Homework ALWAYS due before the class it’s due Section 1, Modules 1-2 Psychology is the scientific study of behaviors and metal processes o Scientific: uses systematic methods to observe and draw conclusions Psychological Perspectives (lenses psychologists use to observe the world) o Same example: students struggling with test anxiety o Psychodynamic approach: Basic premise: unconscious motives and experiences in early childhood govern personality and mental disorders Associated with Freud Not believed in by many scientists, mainly because of Freud’s thoughts on sexual thoughts in children o Behavioral approach: Basic premise: only observable events can be studied scientifically Watson: study of consciousness, thoughts, feelings, etc. should be abandoned (can’t study them objectively, should leave them to philosophers or religious people)
