The two most important network-layer functions in a datagram network are no call setup at network layer routers have no state about end-to-end connections The three most important functions in a virtual-circuit network are 1. call setup, teardown for each call before data can flow 2. every router on path maintains state for each passing connection 3. link, router resources (bandwidth, buffers) may be allocated to VC 3. What is the difference between routing and forwarding? Forwarding is moving packes from a routers input port to the appropriate output Routing is determining the end-to-routes between sources and destinations. 9. Describe how packet loss can occur at input ports. Describe how packet loss at input ports can be eliminated ( without using infinite buffers). Packet loss occurs if there is a buffer overflow due to queuing delays because of slow switching fabric speed.
