1. A student proposed the series of reactions shown below as a means of converting butane to the thioether "A" shown at the end of the scheme. NONE of these reactions is correct - NONE will give the product specified. For each of the reactions shown below, i) indicate what type of reaction is represented by the transformation shown (for example, the process presented might be characterized as an "E1 elimination", even if it couldn't possibley occur as shown) [1 point each], and ii) for each incorrect process shown, designate why the reaction couldn't occur as shown (for example, "it couldn't undergo an elimination because there is no beta hydrogen" or "it could undergo an elimination, but the major product would be [some structure], not the product shown). [3 points each] a) CH 3 -CH 2 -CH 2 -CH 3 CH 3 -CH 2 -CH 2 -CH 2 -Br Br 2 / h ν ΧΗ 3 -ΧΗ 2 2 2 -Βρ ΧΗ 3 -ΟΗ (ροομ τεμ περατυρε29 ΧΗ 3 2 2 2 -Ο-ΧΗ 3 ΧΗ 3 2 2 2 3 S DMSO
