This article explains how social media is influencing the market, consumers views and companies themselves. The video following the article explains the idea behind twitter and what it is being used for in everyday life today. This article discusses what it takes these days to start an E-retailing business today. I think this is extremely relevant, especially today because so many people are using the internet to initiate their startup company. I think one of the main reasons it has been so popular is because it costs nothing to start and can be running within an hour or so. This article, just like the ones prior showcase just how simple technology is making all aspects of life so much easier. Digital Technology-Today‘s Technology This article talks about the many advances of digital technology, pertaining to today‘s society. Module 1 talks about the evolution of technology and says, ―If the past is an indication of the future, the digital revolution has only just begun to make its impact felt‖ ( ). This article discusses the way technology has created dramatic change (from the past to the present) and also a sense of ease and convenience for many tasks throughout our daily lives. One of the main points from this article is that digital technology is a main part of our lives, and I am sure most of us cannot even begin to imagine the world without it. What Does the Future Gamer Look Like? by Tricia Duryee Research and consulting firm, Latitude, conducted a study to forecast the future of gaming. Today, the term gaming doesn‘t just refer to those glued to a television screen with control in hand. Consumers are playing games on computers, tablets, Facebook, smart phones, and on other devices. The key point is that consumers crave the interaction that technology brings. This is an important aspect organizations will need to keep in mind in order to continue engaging and exciting consumers. Web Surfing Helps at Work, Study Says by Rachel Emma Silverman ORDS=internet A recent study called, ―Impact of Cyberloafing on Psychological Engagement‖ found that surfing the web at work can increase productivity. Personal Internet usage is a frequently discussed topic in the workplace and most companies monitor their employee‘s activity. More studies on the various affects of technology have been published in recent years. It will be interesting to see how they affect workplace policies and practices. Technological advances affect other functions and aspects of the world, making it important for organizations to keep up and adapt. Two in Five Mobile Owners Use Internet on the Go by eMarketer Our digital world encompasses a variety of devices. The cell phone has evolved into a smart phone making it seem more like a computer than talking device. The term m-commerce, which stands for mobile commerce, is starting to become a player in how consumers shop and use the Internet. M-commerce is a perfect example of how much technology has advanced within the past one to two years. This is a key aspect for organizations to realize in order to reach the 24/7 consumer. 6 I felt that this was a really good article because it discusses the top ten reasons why people use the internet. The original article questioned what were some of the reasons that consumers use the internet. This article answers that question. . I thought this was a great article that really related to the original assignment because it talks about advertising agencies and how they are adapting to the digital revolution. This is a huge industry to be affected because there are advertisements for every single product out there that fit consumer‘s wants and needs. Ad agencies are going to have to constantly reinvent and themselves as technology and media grow. This article by the McKinsey Quarterly is very relatable. It focuses on social networking and by the vast number of people now accessing these sites through their mobile devices. Being in a sorority and even on campus with other students it is impossible not to notice that almost everyone is checking their phone whether its Facebook, Twitter, or their email. How the Internet Change Consumer Behavior This article explains how the internet has impacted consumers shopping habits, particularly how many more choices they have and what companies must be aware of when selling online. This is similar to the other articles that discussed how consumers online have taught businesses to operate differently when selling online. Consumers can easily spread the word about a great experience or a terrible one. 6 Web Pioneers on What the Future of the Internet Will Look Like This article is interesting in that its opinions from 6 people that helped transform the internet into what it is today. Nobody can completely predict what will happen, but these people can make some well educated guesses. Search and Email Still the Most Popular Online Activities This article shows what people are doing most when they log onto the internet. It‘s important for marketers to know what people are doing on the internet to know how to reach them and how to appeal to them best. This is a great report on the digital world and digital life of today. It is loaded with information and research showing the increasing usage and popularity of the internet. Some points of interest include: how the internet is affecting our real life decisions and social life on the internet. 7 This article and video is an example on how the digital world is changing every day. Wales has become the first UK nation to fully switch to digital TV, which will open a new market for digital technology and usage. This report is one that shows how the internet is changing all of our everyday tasks. From anything from getting driving directions to paying your mortgage payment online, the internet is on step faster and easier. It really puts into perspective how much we rely on the internet for completing daily tasks. This is a great visual report to show you how much the digital revolution had changed our world in the last 10 years. The numbers demonstrated are extraordinary and really show us how much we have shifted. Module 1 discusses how the introduction of the Internet has revolutionized modern society. The world as become more digital, and the pace at which it has made its digital transformation has been extremely fast. The Internet is the propelling force driving the digital revolution forward; it is a technical marvel that connects the world through one network creating a global community on the web. The digital revolution has affected more than just communication; technology is present in every aspect of modern life. One of the most beautiful things about technology is that it is constantly evolving while simultaneously leaving lasting change in society. Half of America Is Using Social Networks – New York Times The Internet is a communication highway that connects millions of people from all over the world. One of the main attributing factors for the Internet‘s success as a global community is simply the amount of people who use the Internet. How the Internet Changed Music – Time Magazine The introduction discusses how the Internet has transformed entire industries. One of the industries that has been affected the most by the Internet is the music business. Some of the obvious changes have been that iTunes and other online music stores have basically replaced old-fashioned record stores. Some of the other changes that are not as talked about are discussed in this article from Time magazine. This piece focuses on how the Internet has expanded the music community and given more artists exposure to the public. This is just another example of how the digital revolution has enriched people‘s life. The Internet‘s Role in Campaign 2008 8 The article discusses the Internet‘s Role in Obama‘s presidential campaign in 2008. The article explains that more than half of the voting age population used the Internet to get involved in the political process. People also used the web to share and debate their views. Researchers discovered that the Internet was equal to newspapers and two times as important as the radio as a source for election news and information. This article is a good example of how the Internet is used a search engine. It also demonstrates the power and influence of the Internet. Being able to take a "library" on vacation is something that has changed the world. It has done away with the boring bulky paperback books and made them into a smlim, stylish, reading source. Being able to access thousands of books in one tiny, technological buddle is a pretty amazing thing. This is requiring Borders, amongst others, to close many stores. With iTunes doing so much work, it has made a huge difference in the music game. There are less stores that you can go to, to buy music. As well as, the loss of a solid record. Everything is sampled and bought off iTunes and put directly on our iPhones or iPods so we can listen to the music we love any where we want to go. Not to stay on the trending music theme here, but this is something I really do have passion on. As much as I love downloading new song every week, it is a real downfall to not have the anticipation of a Guns N Roses album or some other 80s hair band. Anytime now a days the entire album has leaked before it is even released. This is hurting the music business because people aren't buying as many records. This technology has changed the music game for a long time to come. This article is about Zappos and how they have efficiently utilized e-commerce and built one of the most successful start-ups of the decade. Hseih, the CEO, has been given the title of one of the most innovative internet marketers of all time. What differentiates himself and the company is not only the success of the site, but the way in which he manages his staff, his outlook on life, and the overall culture of the business. 9 Digital media has without a doubt changed the music industry. Whether it's for the better or the worst is one of the great unanswerable questions. Recently a group of legal, media and technology experts gathered to discuss future changes and how to accommodate with them. One of the things that I liked in this article is the point the eventually businesses will have to make a decision on how they will utilize the internet. Will the simply have a website or a web service? This article fits in well because it talks about predictions of where the internet could go in the future. It describes six different ways the internet could grow in the near future, and the introduction section talks about the rate of growth in the internet. Discusses different examples of companies currently using social media and the internet to evolve their business. This article goes well with the introduction because it gives an overview of how the internet is being used currently. This is a great article with different statistics covering different areas of the internet and its' impact in today's society. A good article to go in the introduction section because it has broad statistics about the internet and how people use it. This article has to do with the section Being Digital because it has up-to-date information on the core of the digital age: the Internet. It explains the importance of Internet and reveals data to prove that Internet usage over the years has been increasing dramatically. The article also discusses the most recent issue regarding Internet: the divide between dial-up to broadband in today‘s society. The article stresses the importance of making sure ―no one in the digital age is left behind‖ and future actions to take expand Internet usage. For example, it highlights the President‘s announcement for a National Wireless Initiative. The point of this initiative is to make sure almost all Americans (at least 98%) have access to wireless Internet in the next 5 years. 10 This article, Video Calling and Video Chat, relates to Being Digital, because it talks about one of the many usages of the Internet. The article talks about the rise of video chatting on the Internet. People now don‘t have to rely just on e-mails and instant messaging to communicate with others over the Internet. The article reveals some figures about a recent study. The study found that 74% of Americans are Internet users and of those users 23% of them have participated in video chatting or teleconferencing. This article addresses a big concern of the digital age, privacy protection. It explains how in today‘s digital age we have to be really careful about what information we choose to share on the Internet. Otherwise, the Internet can easily invade our privacy. The article explains that this is one of the major pitfalls of the digital age. 080315246.html?mod=googlenews_wsj This article is suited to replace "accessing the internet". It is up to date and explains where "connection has gone in the past 4 years and also gives good visuals as to how connected society is today ie. more internet connections than people. "A new crop of kids" is current as of 2006, but should be replaced by the above article to show how long the internet has been around and to highlight breakthroughs throughout its development. 24/ Consumer behavior drives change; Entertainment and Media players seek new roles in digital value chain This article discusses how consumer behavior has taken a different direction in the past few years; with the rising usage of the Internet and technology such as mobile devices. It warns the media and entertainment industry that they will need to step up their game a bit since you can now read a celebrity tabloid on your iPad, or watch news videos on your cell phone. This is a very important topic because consumers crave flexibility, adaptability and convenience; the Internet offers all of these things and much more. The Death of the Open Web 11 New York Times wrote an article about some of the downfalls of the web; ones that can cross our mind at times, but never discussed. For example, when you are on Facebook and there are ads with websites on the side of the page based on your interests and/or past pages you have visited. Are those trustworthy sites? Or is it simply hackers invading your personal space? This article definitely talks about some negative points, but at the same time says that no one can really ignore the web; or they would highly regret it if they attempted to. Will Your Business Survive the Digital Revolution? This piece talks about how to keep your business surviving throughout the start of the digital revolution. The author discusses how some older generations believe that our Internet couldn‘t get any more advanced and that we have reached the peak; when in reality, it‘s just beginning. Every generation thinks that they go through some monumental stage invention-wise during their lifetime; but none have been as big as the digital and computer-generated craze. It‘s a whole different world and a lot of small brick-and-mortar stores have to close their doors because they cannot compete with those who are brick-and-click. The Digital Enterprise introduction chapter provides a brief overview of the Internet, however various points have progressed and others need to be emphasised. With the aid of online articles and videos, the main points from the chapter will be highlighted with relevant current information. Firstly the usage rates of internet, including the various types of internet uses is developed through recently released data. Secondly the extensive expansion of internet transforming numerous industries, with an example from the music industry is underlined. Finally the continued potential for further internet expansion, including social media as a main feature of today‘s internet, is expressed, discussing both the limits and vastness of opportunities. Firstly this chapter in The Digital Enterprise course outlines the limitless options for how, and how much the internet is utilised by consumers. The chapter discusses the endless possibilities for how users contribute and exploit the internet for personal or professional use to communicate, shop online, research and acquire knowledge among other things. The ―Internet Stats 2010‖1 video c...
