Kate-Lynn Tetreault January 31, 2008 ENG 110 Dr. Susan McHugh What’s in a Word? What is funny? Funny has many different meanings, and can be portrayed in many different ways. In literature there are many different authors who portray their stories through the many aspects of the word funny. Some authors use funny to mean peculiar, humorous, crazy, apprehension, counterfeit, a joke, different, or just something that is plain amusing. Whilst reading “Mother Tongue” by Amy Tan I thought that it was witty how Amy Tan used the example of her mother using Amy to communicate with the stockbroker. Her mother sat in the background telling Amy what to say to him while she was trying to get money back. Soon after the conversation, her mother has to go to the stockbroker’s office and speak to him in person. I thought that this was quite humorous because the mother then had to go speak her broken English to the stockbroker. I feel that Amy Tan used this experience to portray an awkward experience where she felt really peculiar. She uses this as an example
