Chapter 10 Explain why introductions and conclusions are important to a speech. Know and understand the five purposes of a speech's introduction. Understand the methods of gaining the audience’s attention and providing effective conclusions. Know and understand the purposes of a speech's conclusion. Understand the types of effective conclusions. Be able to evaluate introduction and conclusion elements and strategies within an example. Purpose of introductions ----- get audience attentions, give a reason to listen, introduce the subject, establish credibility, preview main ideas. Know and understand those…… easy shit. Effective intros --- 1. illustrations or anecdotes 2. facts or stats 3. quotes 4. humor 5. questions 6. references to historical, recent, personal events 7. reference to the occasion, or preceding speeches. Conclusions --- serves two purposes. It will summarize the speech, and provide closure 8. reemphasize central idea in a memorable way 9. restate the main ideas
