1. What are the central elements in Russian identity that have continually influenced Russian path of development? How important are they and how are they reflected in Russians current Politics? Identity debates (Europe/Asia division) 19 th cent - Slavophiles – no European path of development, use own values that describe Russia as a separate nation. - Westernizes- liberal ideas, western path of development. - Eurasianism- 20 th cent - Alexandra Dugin – Russia as a separate entity Other continuities in identities; - State Vs individual- no individual rights, serfdom(legal documents distinguished degrees of feudal dependency of peasants) until 1821- landowners tied to land and couldn’t move, first parliament (state Duma-lower house of federal assembly in Russia)- only represented elites 1906, “Pocket” state Duma in 2009-not a real representative body. - Imperial identity (starting 17 th cent) - Expansion to the south and to the east, similar to manifest destiny in America, many territories where added.
