Name: Layla Fijany Bio 3a Morning Lab Hypothesis 1: The combined length of male fifth fingers is significantly greater than the combined length of female fifth fingers Materials and Methods One hundred adult subjects were used in this study. Subjects were students, friends and family in Orange County, California. All measurements were made from 15 to 17 of January 2011. Subjects were approached and asked to participate in the study. After agreement was reached, the length of the right and left fifth digits and sex of the individual was recorded. Digits were measured using a small metric ruler placed in the web between the fourth and fifth digit. All data were transferred to MS Excel (Microsoft Corporation, Redmond, Washington) where all further statistical manipulations were performed. Each groups fifth finger data were compiled into a larger class data set (n = 2345 ). Results The mean combined length of male fifth fingers in the individual research study was 12.87 ± 0.12 cm (±SEM, N= 52 ). The mean combined length of female fifth fingers in this study was 11.53 ± 0.11 cm (±SEM, N= 48 ). A one-tailed unpaired t-test revealed that the mean combined length of male fifth fingers were significantly longer than the mean combined length of female fifth fingers (p= 6.05x10 -13 ). These data are shown in Figure One. When the data were compiled into the larger data set, the mean combined length of male fifth fingers in the individual research study was 12.04 ± 0.05 cm (±SEM, N= 1141 ). The mean combined length of female fifth fingers in this study was 10.84 ± 0.04 cm (±SEM, N= 1204 ). A one -tailed unpaired t-test revealed that the mean combined length of male fifth fingers were significantly longer than the mean combined length of female fifth fingers (p= 1.417x10 -127 ). These data are shown in Figure Two.
