The design problem of cyberspace has thus become how to develop information systems that support work socially." -- Prof. David Hakken, SUNY Institute of Technology Simply put, it’s tough to work with just a computer to keep you company. The Internet has changed our lives in so many ways; it’s easy to keep in touch with old friends, make new ones, and make all the same relationships we can make in the physical community. But the very things that make the Internet great—physical distance and a degree of anonymity—can sometimes be challenging when we try to work in the virtual world. There are lots of benefits to a virtual workplace, but there are a few drawbacks to be reckoned with. In this guide, you’ll hear about many of the pros and the cons of working in a virtual environment. When beginning an online internship, there are some common problems you might come across. How can you try to fix them without feeling too frustrated or feeling like you’re not doing a good job with your work? Well, hopefully, this guide can help you figure that out. First and foremost: what’s a virtual workplace? Basically, a virtual workplace means working anytime, anywhere, and with anyone. Much of the same social orders and culture are there, but the physical aspect is taken, for the most part, out of the equation. While work environments were once based solely on physical contact, technology has enabled virtual workplaces to depend on the exchange of information without the face-to-face interaction. The work comes to you via the Internet, rather than you physically going to work. You can write a grant proposal from a coffee shop, conduct an interview during a traffic jam, or do some research for your latest article from your cell-phone. But, if you’re like most virtual interns, you’ll probably be doing most of your work from a

The idea is that technology is the main means of doing business: communicating and collaborating using laptops, networks, e-mail, and cell phones. A lot of people think that the virtual workplace will be the standard for conducting business and commerce in the 21 st century, and, if this is the case, being able to work well in one could be a very valuable skill to have.
