Eli Slutsky 9/1/11 Professor Jordan HUM 2210 Creation Story Since the beginning of time, societies have created stories to explain the mystery of the origin of man and the universe. The Babylonian creation story, better known as the "Enuma Elish", is a recounting of the struggle between cosmic order and chaos. It is basically a myth of the cycle of seasons. This epic is one of the most important sources for understanding the Babylonian worldview, centered on the supremacy of Marduk and the creation of humankind for the service of the gods. Enuma Elish begins with the universe in a formless state, from which emerge two primary gods, Apsu the male, and Tiamat the female. It focuses on how Marduk fashioned the world. After having slayed Tiamat in battle he split her corpse in half. One half was used to create the sky and the other to create dry land. From her saliva he formed the clouds and her head was used for the mountains. From her eyes flowed the Tigris and Euphrates rivers - the two more important rivers in Babylon. After he had created the features on dry land he turned
