Important Vocab Animism - belief in a supernatural power that organizes and animates the material universe. Culture - the arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively: Cuneiform - wedge-shaped characters used in the ancient writing systems of Mesopotamia, Persia, and Ugarit, surviving mainly impressed on clay tablets hieroglyph - a stylized picture of an object representing a word, syllable, or sound, as found in ancient Egyptian and other writing systems. Hominid - a primate of a family (Hominidae) that includes humans and their fossil ancestors. Megalith - a large stone that forms a prehistoric monument Post-and-lintel - simple construction method using a lintel, header, or architrave as the horizontal member over a building void supported at its ends by two vertical columns Shaman - a person regarded as having access to, and influence in, the world of good and evil spirits Prehistory is before the written word. Geologists have measured the radioactive atoms remaining
