Jurisdiction- The district in which a case is to be heard Power or authority to decide certain cases and grant relief On federal level its set in the constitution. All other courts are from Congress Every court has the power over certain cases Types o Subject matter- of a state, county comes from the state or the constitution or a statute. Can be laid out in the state constitution. On federal level its set in the constitution. All other courts are from Congress Refers to the type of cases that a particular can decide ex. If the state legislature creates a court to only heard criminal cases, that court is only limited to criminal cases Applies to our appellate courts. Commonwealth courts covers cases over govt. like school boards. Has appeals from govt. agencies like the unemployment or a workers comp. If you have a criminal case and appeal it goes to the Supreme Court o Federal Subject Matter Civil cases First way- Something exists called diversity of citizenship
