Euthanasia and Physician-assisted Suicide 1AbstractEuthanasia and Physician-assisted Suicide (PAS) is often thought of as controversialmethods of death. Exploration of these topics through studies, statistical analysis, and factualdata can inform the medical community of the impact these programs can have. Compassion inthe medical community should apply to every step of human life, to include death. PalliativeCare may not be the most suitable option for some patients. PAS or Euthanasia may be able tocompassionately offer another option to the suffering and terminally ill.
Euthanasia and Physician-assisted Suicide 2Death is something we will all face one day. To some, this is as simple as waiting until our time has come, but for others, this can be a much more difficult process. Euthanasia and Physician-assisted suicide in terminally ill patients should not only be allowed but should be a respected right of the patient by the medical community. The U.S. Constitution and the Hippocratic Oath are meant to be protections for the patient and statistical analysis of Euthanasia and Physician-assisted suicide supports these programs. So why have these laws not been instituted across the country? There seems to be a strong ethical dilemma and the rights of the patient continue to go unsupported. We should be open to the evidence offered and attempt not to oppress an already vulnerable group of people. Compassion should be an allowance when discussing one’s ability todie with or without assistance. We begin by discussing exactly what Euthanasia and Physician-assisted suicide mean.Euthanasia is the painless killing of a patient suffering from an incurable disease or in anirreversible coma. Physician-Assisted Suicide (PAS) is the voluntary termination of one’s ownlife by taking lethal medication with the direct or indirect assistance of a physician. PAS requires
