Analysis of Data Name___________________________ Date __________ Not only is it important for us to be able to take data but, we must also be able to analyze it numerically. Since the data that we take may vary over a range due to error, we must compensate for this. There are two types of error: systematic and statistical. Systematic errors occur due to consistent inaccuracies in measuring equipment and human error. Once these errors are identified, they can and should be eliminated (Yes, this may mean that the experiment must be repeated.) Statistical errors arise from “small, unknown, and uncontrollable events (Laws, A-20).” Since these errors can not be eliminated we must deal with them mathematically. The first quantity that we need to define is the mean value or the average . This quantity which is denoted by a character with a bar above it is defined as X n X i i n = 1 1 Now we must take into account that all the data points are not equal to this average.
