LABR 1260 –Working for a Living –Summer 2020 - Essay Topics Select ONEof the following topics for your essay. Do NOT choose a question on the same topic that you did for your Topic Summary assignment (e.g. if you wrote your Topic Summary on the minimum wage, do not pick the essay question below about the minimum wage). Several of the questions below have a direct connection to COVID-19 –paid sick leave, universal childcare, technology/changing work, UBI, et cetera. Please feel free when writing your essay to discuss how COVID-19 relates to your question, but do not feel obligated to do so. 1.Canada, like other countries, is grappling with how to get through the COVID-19 pandemic with minimal loss of life and economic damage. The federal government has instituted the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) and Canada Emergency Student Benefit (CESB) to meet immediate needs during the pandemic. Consider CERB/CESB’s impact and discuss whether the federal government should have or could have approached these programs differently, and what should happen to them now. 2.Manitoba currently has a minimum wage of $11.65/hour. Many people believe the minimum wage should be a living wage; some have argued it should be raised as high as $15/hour (or more). Do you think Manitoba should raise their minimum wage to $15/hour? Why or why not?3.The Me Too movement garnered a lot of media attention (which was initially focused on Hollywood, but later expanded into other workplaces). Using examples of how workers have organized using the language/theme of Me Too to fight workplace harassment, discrimination, and related issues, do you think those methods have been effective or ineffective, and why?
